Let’s start with Gordes, classified as one of “the most beautiful villages in France”, where you’ll love its unique geographical location. 400m up on the hillside, Gordes overlooks the Calavon valley, with its church and its Renaissance castle at the top, facing the surrounding hills. You’ll see the Notre Dame de Sénanque Abbey, a wonderful example of 12th century Cistercian art. Surrounded by lavender fields, it is still used as a monastery.
Next, let’s head for Roussillon, a small perched village also classified as one of “the most beautiful villages in France”. Roussillon is located in the heart of the biggest ochre deposit in the world. You’ll fall under the spell of its streets and little picturesque squares and its houses in different shades from the rich palette of ochres.
Saignon, one of the most beautiful sites in the Luberon, is a little village clinging to a rock which has kept its authentic quality and charm thanks to its 12th – 18th century houses, its wash houses, its Clock Tower… Enjoy wonderful 360° views over the Rhône Valley, Alpilles and Cévennes. You could have a leisurely lunch in this little village where peace and quiet reigns.
Let’s continue our private sightseeing tour with one of the most beautiful perched villages in the Luberon, Bonnieux. Before you get there you’ll notice the top of the church bell tower from afar. 425 m high, it rises above the breathtaking landscape of the surroundings and watches over this magnificient village.
The splendid village of Lacoste is located on a lush green hill above a vast plain. It faces the village of Bonnieux which can be seen on the opposite hill. Lacoste houses the famous Marquis de Sade’s castle, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Ventoux, the Luberon, the Monts de Vaucluse and other perched villages.
This private day tour around the Luberon comes to end in Oppède le vieux, a little village dominated by its ruined castle and church. You can also discover the remains of an old medieval fortress which will lead you along its narrow paved streets to the top of the village for a clear view of the Regional Natural Reserve of the Luberon.
On the way back, we’ll stop briefly at the Lavender Museum in Coustellet, where you’ll love the intoxicating fragrance of the little blue flower which symbolizes Provence.
